Granny Smith Was Not an Apple by Sarah Glenn Forston and illustrated by Kris Aro McLeod

Maria Ann Smith was an orchardist from England who moved to Australia in the early 1800s. After leaving the remains of her own apples and some crap apples she’d used in a pie on the edge of her orchard (like a compost pile I guess), she later found a tree had sprouted. The tree grew to have a new kind of apple that was a cross between the crab apple and her own apples. From there she grafted clippings of the new tree to make more (apples don’t grow from seeds apparently, so there goes the whole Johnny Appleseed myth).

The were named Granny Smith because she also dabbled in midwifery and midwives were often called “Granny” at the time. They of course became famous the world over.

This one is good for lessons on historical figures you haven’t heard of yet.
