Night of Cake and Puppets by Laini Taylor

We finally get to learn about the famous first date between Zuzana and Mik from Daughter of Smoke and Bone. I was a huge fan of Zuze when I read the DoSB trilogy a couple of years ago and when I found out this was being published as an illustrated novella I couldn’t wait. The story of Zuze making a treasure hunt for Mik to follow where she is the treasure is nothing short of magical thanks to the help of some scuppies, or wishes. The story was told in alternating points of view with Zue telling the beginning where she sets things up, Mik while he goes on the hunt, and then switches back to Zuze as the hunt ends.

I absolutely loved it. It was cute, heartwarming, magical, and full of great quotes in Taylor’s beautiful, lyrical writing. It makes me hungry for more of this world, but I guess I”ll just have to settle for reading Strange the Dreamer as soon as possible.

I give this one Four Lightsabers.
