Lumberjanes Vol. 3: A Terrible Plan

I finally got my hands on a copy of Vol. 3 of Lumberjanes!

In this installment, Molly and Mal go on a picnic alone during a free day at camp. While on their picnic, they spot the Bear Lady and decide to follow her. The are sucked through a portal and end up in a mysterious land full of crumbling ruins and dinosaurs! Their only way out is to help the Bear Lady find her lost glasses before the other girls figure out they are missing.

Back at camp, the others girls of the Roanoke cabin start their day off by lounging around, but soon decide to try their hand at getting some “mundane” badges. But can Jo, Riley, and April master the mundane, or are they only good at the unusual?

Cue the terrible plans as the girls of Roanoke cabin tackle these challenges.

As always, this volume is full of references to great female minds. While Lumberjanes is an adventure story, at it’s core it’s about female friendship and finding oneself and this volume doesn’t disappoint as the girls learn to what they are good at and what they aren’t while maintaining and strengthening their bond. I love the hilarious names for their badges, puns and tongue in cheek jokes are the best. The Shadowhunters fan in me is really hoping that calling certain badges “mundane” is a reference to that world, and I wouldn’t be surprised in the least if it is.

My only complaint is that it’s only four issues long, I would have loved another chapter of hijinks of the girls at camp trying to earn their badges as we only got to see the result of one of their attempts, and not the disastrous attempt. I give this volume Three and a Half Lightsabers due to the length.
