Last year Marvel did a mini series featuring Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker during the early years of Anakin’s training. The issues were collected into a single volume last Fall. The story had two parts, one set during one of their missions and a flashback to Anakin’s training on Coruscant.
In the present time of the story, Obi-Wan and Anakin are sent to a distant planet to investigate a distress signal. The planet’s native population is thought to have destroyed itself in a civil war hundreds of years before. However, they discover that the survivors of the war are still fighting using salvaged technology and airships. Obi-Wan and Anakin get caught up in the conflict between the Open and Closed who are still waging war against one another. Hoping to end the centuries of bloodshed is a woman who collects and salvages relics from before the war started. Can Anakin and Obi-Wan find a way to help the people of this war torn world and restore peace?
The story in the recent past centers around Anakin’s growing trouble with his emotions and Palpatine’s early influence on the boy that would grow up to become Darth Vader. Palpatine takes him to Coruscant’s seedy underbelly and influences him to help him. It’s the flashback that adds weight to Anakin’s troubled past and struggles to adhere to Jedi teachings.
As a whole I liked the story. I loved the Steampunk elements of the world the two visit. I do wish they would have continued this as an ongoing series as Anakin’s training is something that hasn’t really been explored, at least in the new canon. Another interesting storyline would have been an AU possibility if Anakin had made a different decision about his training in the end of the comic. I don’t want to spoil things, but I’d be curious to see how things would be different or ultimately have the same outcome through a different path.
I give this collected edition four lightsabers.
