The Ninja Libarians: The Accidental Keyhand by Jen Swann Downey

Yes, you read that right, Ninja Librarians. As a Jedi Librarian, I just couldn’t resist reading this one.

The Ninja Librarians

The Ninja Librarian: The Accidental Keyhand is a new Middle Grade novel by debut author Jen Swann Downey about, you guessed it, a group of librarians that can be described as ninjas. Main characters Dorrie and Marcus Barnes are frequent library patrons. While at their library’s Sword and Penn Festival they accidentally find a portal to another library full of librarians from across time, including some historical figures. Petrarch’s Library, the headquarters of a secret society of librarians, the Lybrariad, that fights evil and supports intellectual freedom and free speech across several centuries, or, as Marcus calls them, Ninja Librarians. In order to stay and become lybrarians themselves, they two must prove they mean the library and the lybrariad no harm, but that is easier said than done when multiple people are suspicious of you. Can the two uncover the mystery of why and how they were brought to Petrarch’s Library before it’s too late? Or will they be found guilty and sent home with no way to return?

This book had a cast of quirky and awesome characters. In fact, one character was none other than the famous Cyrano de Bergerac. I absolutely loved every one of them. The historical references always gave me a bit of a chuckle, as did the pop culture references. The multiple Star Wars references and reference to The Princess Bride having the best sword fight ever in it are proof of just how awesome this book is. Because we all know the sword fight between Inigo Montoya and The Man in Black is indeed the best sword fight ever.

In fact, I tweeted about how I was enjoying reading it and the author responded that she was writing a sequel. How awesome is that?

So, if you are looking for and great new Middle Grade book about book loving kids, adventure, and a secret society of librarians who fight evil, definitely give this one a try. I give it Five Lightsabers.

  1. Ah, I love that she tweeted you back! Isn’t that always so exciting??

So it wasn’t corny at all, right? The cover makes me nervous (I know, I know…never judge a book by its cover). Maybe I’ll give it a shot.

    • Yes, it is! Not really. I mean it is for Tweens, but I didn’t find it corny. I didn’t figure out eat the reasons for how they were able to get into Petrach’s library, or who one of the real bad guys was, which is good. The cover features all the important characters. Dorrie, Marcus, Cyrano, and Ebba the first apprentice lybrarian to befriend them, and I’ll admit it could use a better one.
